22.10.2025 30 Years of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Development in Kazakhstan: Anniversary Exhibition “Where Dreams Are Born!”

The Institute of Reproductive Medicine (IRM) invites you to a ceremonial event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the first In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) center in Kazakhstan.

In 1987, the City Center for Human Reproduction (CCHR) was established in Almaty – the country’s first specialized institution focused on addressing infertility. Its founder and first chief physician was Tamara Muftakhovna Dzhusubaliyeva, the Chief Obstetrician-Gynecologist of Almaty. Under her leadership, on October 5, 1995, Kazakhstan’s first IVF laboratory was opened – an event that marked the beginning of a new era in national medicine.

In the early years of Kazakhstan’s independence, when medicine, like the country itself, was searching for new paths of development, the idea of IVF seemed like science fiction. Yet it was during this time in Almaty that the era of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) began, bringing the long-awaited joy of parenthood to thousands of families.

Today, the Institute of Reproductive Medicine (IRM) is an excellent research institution, successfully treating both female and male infertility, utilizing microsurgical techniques, performing genetic diagnostics of embryos, and helping cancer patients preserve their reproductive potential.

Over the past 30 years, more than 30,000 children have been born here – what once seemed impossible has become a reality.

A landmark event in this anniversary year was the address by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, in which he expressed serious concern over the country’s family and demographic situation and instructed the government to launch a special program called “Ansagan Sabi” (“Long-Awaited Child”) starting in 2021.

This initiative became a significant step by the state in supporting families dreaming of having a child and highlighted the vital role of reproductive medicine in the nation’s future.

IRM is rightfully recognized as a leader in reproductive medicine in Kazakhstan and plays a major role in the development of medical tourism. Today, a network of clinics operates in Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent, employing over 500 specialists and welcoming patients from 35 countries across Asia and Europe.

The exhibition at the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan will take visitors through all stages of IRM’s development – from its first steps to international recognition.

The exhibition will feature archival documents and photographs, video materials, rare footage from the early years, a documentary film about the origins of IVF in Kazakhstan, and a celebratory concert featuring children.

A special place will be dedicated to the stories of families and the very children who were once born thanks to IRM – today, they have grown up, are starting their own families, and stand as living symbols of faith, science, and love.
