The National Central Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in conjunction with the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will open the exhibition «ARCHITECTURE OF THREE GENERATIONS», dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on 19 March 2026 at 10:00 a.m.
The exhibition «ARCHITECTURE OF THREE GENERATIONS» promises to be a significant event and give new impetus to the unification of representatives of the professional community of architects throughout Kazakhstan, as well as to present to a wide range of visitors the achievements of our architects in the past and at the present stage of development of Kazakhstani society.
The history of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan (UARK) covers a significant period of its development, from its foundation (1936) during the Soviet era, to its activities during the years of Kazakhstan’s independence. For many decades, the organization has brought together professionals involved in the development of master plans for cities, mass housing, and socially significant public buildings, as well as iconic architectural objects in the republic. All periods in the history of the Union of Architects of Kazakhstan are characterized by significant achievements, including the 1960s and 1980s, which were marked by the implementation of large-scale urban development projects and the construction of unique buildings. In 1992, the Union became a full member of the International Union of Architects, representing the architecture of Kazakhstan at the global level.
The Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan fulfils the main tasks of promoting the development of architecture and urban planning in Kazakhstan, protecting the interests of the professional architectural community, promoting creative initiatives, and improving the skills of architects. The current President of the Board of the Union of Architects of Kazakhstan is Honored Architect of Kazakhstan Sadyrbaev Gabit Sultangalievich.
The main purpose is that as part of the celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the exhibition aims to showcase the history and key milestones in architectural and urban planning development in the republic. It also demonstrates achievements in this field during the periods of the Kazakh SSR and Kazakhstan’s independence.
The exhibition consists of three sections. It characterizes the history of architecture in Kazakhstan and presents the best projects from three periods spanning three generations, from the foundation of the republic to today. It also showcases the work of both the founders of Kazakh architecture and contemporary architects who have made significant contributions to national architecture.
Kazakh architecture gained widespread recognition throughout the former USSR and beyond in the 1960s–1980s. Significant public buildings played a major role in shaping the appearance of Kazakh cities. Examples include the ‘Complex Development of Dostyk Avenue’ (Almaty, 1971), the Palace of the Republic (Almaty, 1972), the Kazakhstan Hotel (Almaty, 1980), and the Medeu Complex. Many of these buildings received State Prizes from the USSR and the Kazakh SSR. The best projects of the independence period are characterized by a synthesis of professional architectural solutions and modern technologies, such as Republic Square with the Independence Monument in Almaty, the Palace of Peace and Harmony, Baiterek, the Khan Shatyr, and the Hazret Sultan Mosque in Astana.
The exhibition will feature a scientific and practical conference, with the participation of leading architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which will discuss not only the history, development, and formation of architecture in Kazakhstan, but also current issues in modern construction and the implementation of future projects. There will also be an award ceremony for exhibition participants and the presentation of diplomas to new members of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Geography of the exhibition: After its opening in Almaty, it will be presented in various regions of Kazakhstan, which will allow it to reach a wide range of visitors and familiarize the population with the achievements of Kazakh architecture and the history of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
