18.03.2026 The exhibition “National Clothing – A Bright Reflection of the Nation’s Culture”

On March 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., the National Central Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan will host the ceremonial opening of the exhibition “National Clothing – A Bright Reflection of the Nation’s Culture”, dedicated to National Clothing Day as part of the “Nauryznama” decade.

Traditional clothing is a vivid embodiment of the cultural code and historical memory of any nation. Through it, one can understand a nation’s worldview, features of everyday and economic life, adaptation to the natural environment, social structure, and aesthetic ideals. Today, authentic examples of traditional clothing that have preserved their form and construction are primarily held in museum collections.

The purpose of the exhibition is to popularize the national clothing of the Kazakh people as an important component of cultural heritage and to demonstrate its continuity in the modern fashion space.

The cultural artifacts displayed at the exhibition clearly reflect differences in clothing based on age, social status, and family position in Kazakh society. A significant part of the exhibition consists of tools and instruments used in clothing production, as well as photographs that convey the authentic appearance of their era, presented with interpretations using artificial intelligence technologies. Visitors will be able, via QR codes, to compare the original images and their descriptive data with AI-generated versions.

Clothing served not only practical purposes but also educational and symbolic functions. Every ornament and decoration reflects the worldview and spiritual values of the people.

During the years of independence, attitudes toward national clothing have changed significantly: it has become an important marker of ethnocultural identity. Today, elements of the national costume are widely used at public events, in cultural projects, and in everyday life.

As noted by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Qasym-Jomart Toqaev, at the IV session of the National Kurultai:
“National clothing itself is a vivid reflection of the nation’s culture. Therefore, it is certainly appropriate for our young men and women to wear national clothing not only on holidays but also in everyday life.”

The exhibition program includes:

  • Guided tours

  • Meetings with ethnographers and ethno-designers

  • A small fashion show (defile) of national clothing samples

The event aims to revive national heritage, foster historical awareness among the younger generation, and strengthen national identity.

Representatives of the media and city residents are invited to participate.
