Turkish mosaic is a popular art genre, dating back to 300 BC. Pictures and various products of the decor have long been famous for their expressiveness and luxury, served as an ornament of palaces, temples, churches. During the Golden Age, this art was spread in the Roman and Byzantine empires for the decoration of floors, ceilings, and walls. For example, a famous ceramic mosaic decorated with tulips was invented in Turkey. The ancient Turkish residents mainly created a vegetable painting. The most famous and ancient mosaics are found in Gazentepe, Hataye (Turkey), Ravenna (Italy), Bardo (Tunisia), Park Guel (Spain) and Jerusalem (Israel). Currently, interest in mosaic art is increasing among many nations of the world, and there is an improvement in the technology for producing mosaic tiles and works of art.

The Gypsy Girl, known to the whole world, made of tiny pieces of natural stone based on ancient Greek myths, as an analogue of Mona Lisa, being a model of Byzantine art and a symbol of the Mosaic Museum of Turkey, became the symbol of mosaic art. A reproduction of the painting “Gypsy” will be presented for the first time at the exhibition by the craftswomen of the Group under the leadership of Seher Altyner.

After many years of work in the financial department of Philip Morris Company, Seher took up the creative work of mosaic, studied the intricacies of making mosaics in Izmir’s studios and the ancient Byzantine mosaic technique of Italy, and received an artistic education in Ravenna (Italy, Emilia-Romagna region). In her work she referred to the works of famous artists such as Van Gogh, Michelangelo, Klimt, Vermeer and Botticelli.
