The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan (hereinafter referred to as the Central Museum) opens the exhibition on February 20, 2025 at 10.00 a.m. Golden Horde (Jochi Ulus) period historical material heritage»
At the third meeting of the National Kurultai “Honest man – Honest work – Honest income”, held on March 15, 2024 in Atyrau, Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the importance of taking measures to preserve the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage. In his speech, the President noted that this year marks the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Jochi Ulus (the Great Steppe), and that the past, present and future of our country are closely intertwined with its historical heritage.
The purpose of the exhibition is to popularize Kazakhstan as the heir to the empire of the Golden Horde (Jochi Ulus) and the state that preserved the rich historical and cultural heritage of that period, both in our country and in the international arena.
The exhibition will feature unique artifacts from the archaeological collections of the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve “Ulytau” and the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve “Saraishyk”, divided into three information complexes.:
I. The arekheological collection of the Middle Ages – artifacts of the XIII-XIV centuries, reflecting the culture and way of life of the Kazakh people of the Golden Horde period from the archaeological fund of the Central Museum. The presented artifacts, found as a result of expeditions or discovered accidentally in settlements, reflect various aspects and aspects of the cultural traditions of nomadic and urban cultures. The materials of the archaeological expedition of 1946-1950 can be highlighted in particular. under the leadership of academician A.H.Margulan, who discovered traces of the ancient urban culture of Kazakhstan and conducted archaeological excavations in Otrar, Taraz, Sayram, Syganak, Saraishyk, as well as materials from the mausoleums of Syrlytam, Bolgan-Ana and Jochi Khan. The exhibition will feature artifacts found at the above-mentioned sites during research conducted at the Saraishyk settlement (2000) under the guidance of the famous archaeologist, Doctor of Historical Sciences Z.Samashev, as well as architectural facades and miniature models of mausoleums.
II. Collections of the National Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve “Ulytau” named after A.H.Margulan (1946), collected as a result of research by an archaeological expedition conducted by the head of the Zhezkazgan detachment of the Institute of Archeology Zh.Smailov (1991, 1997-1978). The unique artifacts found near the mausoleums of Jochi Khan and Bolgan-Ana are the wooden threshold of the entrance to the mausoleum of Jochi Khan, the decorative element of the dome of the mausoleum – “kubba”, painted tiles and Arabic inscriptions that decorated the outer wall of the mausoleum, silver dirhams and copper coins of the khans of the Ulus of Jochi, etc.
III. The Small Palace of Jochi Ulus is an economic, religious and spiritual center. Saraishyk is a city whose crafts and architecture developed under the influence of the Great Silk Road. The exhibition will feature a variety of glazed ceramics, metal and jewelry, household items and much more found in the city of Saraishyk. Visitors will be able to get acquainted with exhibits from the collection of the Saraishyk State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve. The mentioned artifacts were discovered as a result of archaeological research conducted under the guidance of an archaeologist, Doctor of Historical Sciences.Samashev (1999-2000, 2003-2005), and since 2019, A.Turarula has been an archaeologist at the museum.
It is known that coins were minted in Saraishyk in the late 12th – early 14th centuries. During excavations in the city, copper coins with silver dirhams of the Golden Horde, Khorezm, Samarkand, Iran, etc. were discovered. In addition, numismatic materials from the Central Museum and the Saraishyk State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve will be presented at the exhibition.
A round table on the theme “Historical and cultural heritage of the Golden Horde: preservation, restoration and research” will also be held within the framework of the exhibition.
Well-known Russian scientists, researchers of medieval urban culture, cultural scientists, restorers, architects, employees of museums and museum reserves, as well as other scientific research organizations, will take part in the round table and make presentations.
