The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Almaty for the first time open an international exhibition of reproductions of works by the outstanding Lithuanian artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis – “STEP INTO THE WORLD OF ČIURLIONIS: THE SEAMLESS FUSION OF ART AND MUSIC”, on 16 June 2025 at 4 pm.
The aim of the exhibition is to introduce the Kazakh audience to the work of Čiurlionis, to show the relationship between painting and music, and to convey the philosophical ideas and worldview of the artist, who sought to express the harmony of the universe through his works.
About the artist and the significance of his work for Lithuania
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) was one of the most prominent Lithuanian artists and composers, whose work combined symbolism, modernism and romanticism. His artistic style is characterized by deep philosophically, rich imagination and musicality. In his painting, Čiurlionis sought to convey the inner rhythm and melody, which makes his work a unique phenomenon in world art.
Čiurlionis occupies a special place in the cultural heritage of Lithuania. He is a symbol of the national revival and spiritual wealth of the country. Despite his relatively short life, he made a significant contribution to Lithuanian art, becoming not only one of the first professional Lithuanian artists, but also playing an important role in shaping national identity. Čiurlionis created about 300 paintings and graphic works. His original paintings are kept in the Lithuanian National Art Museum, Kaunas Art Gallery and private collections. In addition to his paintings, he left behind more than 200 musical works, including symphonic poems, piano pieces and choral compositions. His works continue to inspire contemporary generations and demonstrate the Lithuanian people’s deep connection with nature, mythology and the cosmos.
The exhibition “STEP INTO THE WORLD OF ČIURLIONIS: THE SEAMLESS FUSION OF ART AND MUSIC” features 20 key works by Čiurlionis, including the series “Creation of the World”, “Sonata of the Sea” and individual works reflecting his mystical and symbolist perception of the world. Each painting accompanied by explanatory texts that reveal the artist’s intentions and artistic methods.
The exhibition will allow visitors to discover the unique world of the artist, touch his philosophy and feel the depth of his artistic vision. It is an important cultural event, strengthening the ties between Lithuania and Kazakhstan through great art.
In the program of the official opening ceremony of the exhibition:
- Welcome speech by the Executive director of the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Mr S.B. Sarov.
- Welcome speech by Mr Gvidas KERUSAUSKAS, Consul General of the Republic of Lithuania in Almaty.
- Presentation of the art of Ciurlenis by Mr Antanas ŠATAS, Counsellor of the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Almaty.
M.K. Čiurlėnis’ compositions will play in the background, allowing visitors to enter the world of the artist and composer.
The exhibition schedule is 17-26 June 2025, from 9.00 am. – 6.00 pm., except Tuesday.
