26-27.04.2024 International scientific and methodological conference “XVI Orazbayev Readings”

The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museology and the State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve-Museum “Tambaly” held an international scientific and methodological conference “XVI Orazbayev Readings” on April 26-27, 2024.

afisha-orazbaevAbdulmanap Medeuovich Orazbayev is a famous scientist, archaeologist, teacher, one of the founders of the modern Kazakhstan school of field archaeological research methods, as well as the department of archaeology, ethnology, and museology of the Kazakh National University. Scientific activity of A.M. Orazbayev throughout his life, was associated with the history of the material culture of Bronze Age tribes and the monuments of early nomads. During 45 years of scientific research, he headed the North Kazakhstan archaeological expedition (1954, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1967), and conducted field research in Western Kazakhstan (1968). In 1957, 1961,1962, 1963, 1972, 1974 he carried out excavations in Central Kazakhstan under the leadership of academician A.Kh. Margulan. He headed the East Kazakhstan in 1958, 1985–1988, and Semipalatinsk archaeological expedition in 1989-1990. A.M. Orazbayev developed a periodization of Bronze Age monuments in Northern Kazakhstan. He identified three stages in the development of Andronovo culture: Fedorov, Alakol, and Zamarayev, in which he saw independent, unique cultures.

The conference is planned to discuss problems in the following areas:

• Ancient and medieval archeology of Eurasia;

• General and current issues of ethnic history and ethnocultural processes;

• Memories and reflections on outstanding archaeologists;

• Field materials of archaeological and ethnographic expeditions;

• Methods of studying, preserving and museumifying historical and cultural heritage;

• Interdisciplinary methods in historical disciplines

Working languages of the conference are Kazakh, Russian, English.

The conference will be attended by archaeologists, ethnographers, historians, cultural experts, as well as museum specialists from Kazakhstan, Russia and Uzbekistan.

Within the conference, lectures will be held by the museum’s scientific staff - Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor A.N. Podushkin “The Kangyu State and the Great Silk Road” and candidate of historical sciences, numismatist-orientalist P.N. Petrov “Numismatics of the East and the Golden Horde Heritage of Kazakhstan.”
