March 14, 2023, at 16.00 h. The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan opens the exhibition "Jewelry of the people of Central Asia and the Caucasus of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century". The exhibits are provided from the private collection of the famous antiquarian and collector Prince Azat Akimbek. The collection consists of over 200 metal products — jewelry and accessories of the people of Central Asian countries.

"Jewelry of the people of Central Asia and the Caucasus of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century"Jewelry of the people of Central Asia was popular in the everyday life of oriental beauties and contributed to the emergence of new ideas from masters-jewelers. Ornaments of Kazakhs, Kirghizs, Turkmens, Uzbeks, Uighurs and Karakalpaks represent a huge layer in the cultural heritage of these peoples. The vivid originality of the traditional art of the people of Central Asia reflects the facets of the centuries-old history of nomadic and settled peoples, which have been interconnected by ethnic and cultural processes since ancient times. Artistic metalworking in Central Asian countries, especially precious metal products, like no other art form has brought to us the highest achievements of masters of folk art.

The high traditions of the craft that developed in the Sak era did not perish in subsequent times. Comparing the works of Sak and Sarmatian torevts and jewelers with the jewelry of Central Asian jewelers, we discover the amazing vitality of ancient traditions. Thus, the type of headdress that emerged in the Sak period in its main features has survived to the present day in the form of the Kazakh saukele. Even more impressive are the analogies between the products of the polychrome style of the Hunnic period and the jewelry of Western Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Karakalpakstan. They are characterized not only by typological proximity, but also by the similarity of ornamental decoration and production technology.

In the Turkic period, the ornament in its special steppe variant, which we can now see on the ornaments of the people of Central Asia, was widely spread. The jewelry art of the Central Asian peoples is mainly associated with the decoration of women's costumes, reflecting the peculiarities of their way of life, culture and artistic taste.

Central Asian master-jewelers managed to achieve a high technical and aesthetic level of products. They possessed a wide arsenal of technical methods of their manufacture. Casting, forging, cutting, notching, engraving, stamping, notched enamel, blackening, grain and filigree were available to them. Master jewelers worked most often alone, only in their declining years resorting to the help of a student to pass on the secrets of their skill.

The exhibition will last until March 31, 2023.
